The Mangrove Swamps of Dubreka

January 29, 2000

The U.S. Embassy organized an expedition to the mangrove marshes near Dubreka, in the shadow of the foothills of the Fuuta Jallon, just up the coast from Conakry.

We saw a lot of interesting birds, most of which were too quick for my camera. By far the most interesting wildlife I saw was this fish, called a mudskipper. It hangs out at the swamp's edge, climbing out of the water at will and crawling around on the mud on its fins.

At the end of the day, within sight of Dubreka town, our motor conked out for good and we had to be towed in by another boat.
